🌟 Meet Huckleberry!

🐾 ABOUT THIS ANIMAL:

Huckleberry came to us all the way from Mexico, where he was brought to safety during a sterilization campaign on the road to Celaya. His rescuers quickly discovered that underneath that handsome exterior was what they called an “incredibly delightful personality”—a kind, affectionate, well-behaved dog who loves being with people.

Now that Huckleberry has his passport stamped and has made his way to FOHA, we’re getting to know that personality ourselves. And we’ve learned something important:

Huckleberry is a big, goofy, adventure-loving lap dog who takes squirrel surveillance VERY seriously. 😂🐿️

Huckleberry is confident and curious when he’s out exploring. On a walk through the woods, he happily hopped onto wooden platforms without any prompting and seemed ready to investigate whatever came next. He generally walks very nicely on leash and spends much of his walk on a loose lead—but when wildlife enters the picture, that nose switches on and Huckleberry becomes VERY interested. He’s a strong boy when he’s determined to investigate a critter, so his future family should be prepared to continue working on those moments with him.

Back inside, you’ll meet a different Huckleberry. Sit down and apparently you’ve just invited him into your lap. He’ll climb right up, lean in for affection, and happily soak up all the love you’re willing to give him.

He’s also playful, silly, loves toys and treats, and can get adorably vocal when playtime gets especially exciting. He’s eager to meet people and seems convinced that strangers are simply friends he hasn’t introduced himself to yet.

Huckleberry has plenty of enthusiasm, plenty of brains, and absolutely no understanding that lap dogs are traditionally much smaller.

🐕 HOW AM I WITH DOGS:

My previous caregivers described me as a fantastic companion for other dogs! My friends at FOHA will continue learning more about my individual play style and preferences while I’m here.

🐱 HOW AM I WITH CATS:

My history with cats is unknown.

I am VERY interested in squirrels and other critters I see outside, so my friends at FOHA can talk with you about whether a cat test may be appropriate and what they’ve observed.

👶 HOW AM I WITH KIDS:

My previous caregivers report that I’ve done well with children and adults. My friends at FOHA can help determine whether I’ll be a good match for the children in your family.

🎓 I KNOW THE FOLLOWING COMMANDS:

I’m a smart, curious guy who seems like I’d really enjoy activities that make me use my brain!

I’ll sit for treats, although my FOHA friends aren’t entirely sure yet whether I know the actual “sit” command or have simply figured out that sitting = snacks. Either way, I’m learning the system pretty quickly. 😉

I enjoyed working with a snuffle mat and would likely benefit from enrichment activities that let me sniff, search, problem-solve, and explore. The Kong took me a little longer to figure out—but nobody becomes an enrichment expert overnight!

I’m also easy to harness and generally walk very nicely, especially in a harness. Just remember that if a squirrel appears, I am strong and I may have Opinions about which direction our walk should go.

🏠 MY HOUSEBREAKING AND/OR CRATING:

I’m housebroken! ⭐

My FOHA friends have seen me consistently take care of my business outside, and I’ve kept my kennel clean throughout the day.

💖 THINGS I LIKE:

Cuddles • Climbing into laps • People • Walks • Exploring the woods • Toys • Treats of ALL kinds • Snuffle mats • Using my nose • Getting attention • Adventures • Investigating wildlife • Being silly • Being wherever my people are

⚠️ THINGS I’M WORKING ON:

Remembering that squirrels do not get to determine the direction of our walks • Staying connected to my person when something REALLY interesting catches my attention • Keeping four paws down when I’m excited • Continuing to exercise my smart brain with training and enrichment

Huckleberry is one of those dogs who gives you a little bit of everything.

He’s confident and adventurous outside, affectionate and cuddly inside, and goofy enough to make sure life never gets too serious. He’ll happily explore the world with you, investigate every squirrel in the neighborhood, and then climb directly into your lap when the adventure is over.

Huckleberry traveled all the way from Mexico looking for his next great adventure. This time, he’s hoping it comes with a family, plenty of walks, lots of love, and a lap that doesn’t have a weight limit. 💛🐾

Spay/neuter, vaccines (rabies, distemper & Bordetella), 1-month access to Petcademy for training and behavior support, slip lead leash, 1 bag starter food, 1 month flea/tick & heartworm preventatives, diagnostic testing, and additional medical procedures as recommended by our vet.
