Nutritional Needs

Proper nutrition is critical for happy, healthy pets. Feeding them a balanced diet results in a shiny, soft coat, plenty of bouncy energy, and a pet at its proper weight for its breed. There are lots of choices and various factors to consider when it comes to which pet food to choose Some of those include breed, size, food sensitivities, and their personal preference.

Nutritional Requirements Differ

Every dog is different and no two appetites are alike. There are small, medium, and large dogs, along with dogs with sensitive stomachs or food allergies. Large dogs like Saint Bernards and German Shepherds have different nutritional needs than Dachshunds or Teacup Poodles. Active dogs like Jack Russell Terriers and Border Collies use more calories than Bulldogs.

Dogs and cats have different nutritional needs. For dogs, a balanced diet includes proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Cats need high levels of protein, moderate levels of fat, and small amount of carbohydrates. They also require other nutrients including vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids.

Choose the Right Food

Feeding our pets from the table isn’t a good idea; people food generally is too high in salt and added sugar, and could trigger an allergic reaction. Although some foods are okay served plain, others are toxic and could require an emergency trip to the veterinarian. It can also lead to weight gain and bad behavior like begging.

As your pet ages, their nutritional needs change. They may become less active and gain weight. Asking your veterinarian for advice on which pet food to switch to helps you decide on the healthiest dietary alternative for them.

Your dog may no longer be a puppy and your cat may no longer be a kitten, but proper nutrition is still important. Love them by feeding them right. For more information, contact your local veterinarian.
