Spring is officially here and summer’s just around the corner, which means more barbecues, outdoor activities, and fun in the sun. However, it also brings the increased possibility of unsettled weather. Hurricane season officially begins on June 1. Weather can be unpredictable, so pet owners are urged to prepare ahead of time and be ready to move to safety if necessary.
Having a plan already in place lessens the likelihood that you and your pet will encounter difficulty if you need to make a decision in an emergency. Knowing what to do also reduces stress and worry. If local officials ask you to evacuate, your dog or cat should too; leaving them behind means they could get lost, injured, or worse.
Things to include in your plan:
- Decide where to go in an evacuation. Many shelters and hotels aren’t pet-friendly. Doing your research in advance helps.
- Develop a buddy system. Find out which neighbors, friends, and relatives will be available to care for your pets if you can’t.
- Microchip your pet. Keep your address and phone number up-to-date, for any emergency contact outside of your immediate area.
Emergencies come in many forms. You may only need to be away from home briefly, or evacuate permanently. One way to prepare for the worst includes ordering a rescue alert sticker to post on or near your front door, to let rescue workers know that animals are inside. Another way is to pack an emergency kit with supplies including:
- A pet first aid kit
- Seven to 10 days’ worth of canned or dry food
- Disposable litter trays, with litter and paper towels
- Feeding dishes and water bowls
- An extra collar, harness, or leash
Spring and summer can be fun, if you’re prepared. Don’t take chances. A little advance planning goes a long way.
